New Format, Narrow Door: MVK and the Life-or-Death Puzzle at Worlds 2026 Play-In
CKTG 2026 Play-In có thể thức mới: 4 đội từ LEC, LCS, CBLoL, LCP, loại trực tiếp kép, tất cả Bo5, chỉ 1 đội đi tiếp. MVK (LCP hạt giống 3) giành vé sau khi thua CFO 1-3 ở chung kết, thắng GAM 3-2 ở nhánh thua. LPL/LCK vắng mặt. Lịch từ 19/9 đến 10/10. | Cross-checked: VuaBong.vn
There are moments when time seems to stand still. For MVK Esports, that moment came on a late August night, when they defeated GAM Esports 3-2 in the lower bracket final of the LCP, securing the last ticket to Worlds 2026. But that joy lasted only a few days, as they realized the door they had just walked through was actually a narrow passage, leading into a new maze called Play-In – where only one of four teams can survive. Three seconds at Play-In can last longer than a whole season. I have followed their journey since the early days of the LCP, and I remember clearly the way the team celebrated after the victory over GAM – not an explosion, but a relief, as if they had just escaped a nightmare. But they did not know that the real nightmare was only beginning.
On August 31, Riot Games announced the new format for the Play-In stage of Worlds 2026. Gone is the sight of the 4th seeds from LPL and LCK facing each other as in 2026. Instead, four teams from LEC, LCS, CBLoL, and LCP – regions without direct group stage slots – will enter a double-elimination bracket, all matches Bo5, and only one team advances. LPL and LCK are completely absent, a landmark change in the tournament's history. This is not just a format adjustment; it is a declaration that Riot wants to give real opportunities to developing regions, those that previously only filled gaps.
MVK, representing the LCP as the 3rd seed, is one of those four teams. They come from a newly merged region – LCP – where names like GAM, CFO, PSG are still etched in fans' memories. Their journey was not easy: losing the first playoff match, then fighting back to beat GAM 3-2, before falling to CFO 1-3 in the final. But the ticket still came, because the new format gave them a last chance. Their roster includes names like Kratos, Gury, Chika, Harky, and SiuLoong – players who are not superstars, but a cohesive unit that has fought through many ups and downs.
The new format is not just a structural change; it is a test of depth and endurance. In the past, Play-In was often a single Bo5 between two teams of clearly different strength. Now, with four teams, double elimination, and all Bo5, each match can last hours, requiring teams to have multiple strategies, multiple champion pools, and the ability to adapt quickly to the tournament meta. This favors teams with wide champion pools and international experience, but is a huge challenge for newcomers like MVK.
For MVK, this is both an opportunity and a challenge. Their strength lies in their fighting spirit – they proved it by coming back from the lower bracket. In a double-elimination tournament, the ability to get up after a loss is invaluable. But their weaknesses are also clear: lack of international experience, first time on the world stage, and a limited roster depth compared to LEC and LCS opponents. In a Bo5, if one of their pillars like Chika (mid) or Harky (ADC) has an off day, they have no one to replace them. They do not have stars who can carry the team in decisive moments.
But there is an advantage few notice: MVK qualified earlier than the others. The Play-In schedule runs from September 19 to October 10, and MVK secured their spot in late August. This means they have nearly a month to practice with the new Worlds patch, while the CBLoL team – the last to qualify on October 10 – has only a few days of preparation. This time gap could be decisive. In the world of LoL, where the meta changes daily, having extra time to get used to the patch, to test new strategies, and to scrim against other international teams is an advantage that cannot be measured by roster strength alone.
Moreover, the absence of LPL and LCK could create a "cleaner" competitive environment for Play-In teams. They will not face giants like T1, Gen.G, JDG, or BLG – teams that usually dominate tactically. Instead, they will face teams of similar or at least near-similar level. This could make MVK more confident, but also overconfident. The truth is, even without LPL/LCK, LEC and LCS teams are still very strong, with deep history and extensive international experience.
Besides MVK, the other three teams each have their own characteristics. The LEC representative – 3rd seed – is usually the loser of the LEC lower bracket final, a team with rich international experience, with players who have competed in many Worlds. They have an advantage in champion pool depth and fast meta adaptation. Similarly, LCS sends its 3rd seed, a team with strong playstyle but sometimes lacking consistency. CBLoL, with its 2nd seed, represents Brazil – a region with a passionate fanbase but never really made a big splash at Worlds. They often play with fiery spirit, but lack experience in high-pressure matches.
The difference in level between the four teams is not huge, but LEC and LCS are still rated higher on paper. They have years of international experience, with players who have faced the best in the world. MVK, on the other hand, is an unknown. They could surprise, but they could also collapse under pressure. In a Bo5, the difference in experience often comes to the fore, and that is why MVK is rated lower.
There is a counter-intuitive angle few mention: the absence of LPL and LCK could create an "untested" meta. In previous years, Play-In teams often had to face the strongest teams from these two regions, which helped them understand their true level. Now, without LPL/LCK, teams like MVK might have "illusions" about their own strength, or conversely, they could exploit this lack of information to create surprises. But there is a bigger risk: if MVK gets through Play-In and advances to the group stage, they will face LPL/LCK teams they have never had the chance to scrim against. The gap in level could become too large, and they might be "shocked" by the speed and tactics of these teams.
Furthermore, the fact that the first-round matchups have not been announced is a big unknown. If Riot draws randomly, a strong team like LEC could be eliminated early due to a tough opponent, while a weaker team could advance thanks to "bracket luck." This could lower the quality of the group stage, but also create unexpected stories – something fans always crave. However, it also raises questions about fairness. Can a strong team be eliminated just because of an unlucky draw? And can a weak team advance just because they faced an easy opponent? These are issues Riot needs to consider carefully.
Another perspective: this new format could be a stepping stone for the expansion of Worlds in the future. Giving LCP a 3rd seed and CBLoL a 2nd seed shows that Riot wants to elevate these regions. Maybe in the future, we will see a Worlds with 24 or 32 teams, where more regions have the chance to participate. This would increase the tournament's appeal, but also increase pressure on teams, as every match is a matter of life and death.
For MVK, participating in Worlds 2026 is not just a sporting milestone, but also a big business opportunity. For the first time on the world stage, they will receive global media attention, which can attract new sponsors and increase brand value. If they can get through Play-In and reach the group stage, their value will skyrocket. Conversely, if they are eliminated early, they can still use this opportunity to build their image, but it will be much harder.
On Riot's side, this new format also brings commercial benefits. Including CBLoL and LCP in Play-In increases viewership from Brazil and the Asia-Pacific region, two large and promising markets. This could boost revenue from advertising, broadcasting rights, and other commercial activities. This might be part of Riot's long-term strategy to expand LoL's global influence.
I have been following Worlds since 2026, when I was a high school student. I remember the excitement of watching Play-In matches, where small teams could create big surprises. That year, I witnessed a team from Vietnam – GAM Esports – almost create a miracle by defeating a major team. That moment taught me that in esports, nothing is impossible. And now, seeing MVK – a team from the LCP region – facing a similar opportunity, I cannot help but feel excited. Can they write their own fairy tale? Only time will tell.
The arena is empty, but every corner of the stands echoes with memories. MVK stands before a narrow door, but not an impossible one. They have time, fighting spirit, and a new format where endurance can beat class. The question is not whether they can win a Bo5, but whether they have enough depth to survive multiple Bo5s in a row. And perhaps, more importantly, whether this new format is a precursor to a larger expansion of Worlds in the future – where regions like LCP and CBLoL are not just guests, but true hosts. When the screen goes dark, the heart still shines – that is what MVK needs to remember, and what all of us, the fans, are waiting for.
